13 Feb 2010
We walked over to the bluff above Mavericks to watch the contest. Saw lots of people, had a good breakfast, Gale got soaked by spray from a really big wave, we saw some of the surfing, and had a fun adventure.
It also shows how fast erosion is happening; a big slab of concrete fell
between the 30 January set and this set.
Movies
None of these have any of the contest surfers in them, they are just the
people, the waves, and the area. One of them *might* have captured one of
the surfers, but I couldn't spot him (Gale saw him at the same time through
the binoculars).

Pictures
These first 3 show a sequence of Gale standing on the bluff (so you can see high
high above the waves she is), then the spray from a wave towering over her, and
then her back totally drenched. This was the highest wave we saw along the bluff.
I was taking the picture, and saw the wave too late to warn Gale...

The first pictures shows a concrete slab foundation hanging out from the
bluff on 30 January, during the last high surf. A small piece (about 4x6 feet)
had broken off the previous night, but the rest was still there (it's visible
to the left in the second set of pictures). The 2 pictures
below show it on 13 February, and you can see the whole thing is now on the sand,
and the bluff has eroded away. It's happening in this area very quickly.
