Pictures from Day 4
(Bryce Canyon, on the way to Capitol Reef)

After an early breakfast, we headed out through the east entrance to Zion, through a rather spectacular tunnel. Today's drive was probably the most varied and dramatic of the trip, taken as a whole. Some amazing vistas, both on the way to Bryce Canyon, and between Bryce and Torrey.

We hiked down the Queen's Head Garden trail from Sunrise point at Bryce, and then around one of the loop trails to southeastern edge of the rim, hiking through a variety of weird and beautiful rocks, spires, and ridges. We then walked 3 or so miles back along the rim trail to our starting point.

From their, we headed off for Capitol Reef, on Utah 12.

At the end of the day we climbed to 9400 feet first in rain, and eventually in snow, with views of Capitol Reef to our right, and some amazingly tall aspens, in full fall color, for mile after mile.

In Torrey, we eventually (by luck, and other motels being full) found ourselves at the Capitol Reef Inn. This had to be one of our best lodging/meal combinations of the trip. The room was large, comfortable, and so were the beds. The restaurant was somewhat funky, but seemed to be mostly family run, and had an eclectic clientale, and people seemed animated and friendly, far more so than at Springdale... The food was good, and we went to bed quite happy.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. The labyrinth of "hoodoos" and ravines created by erosion are really stunning. As one early settler is quoted: ``A hell of a place to lose a cow.''

On our way from Bryce to Torrey, Utah (gateway to Capitol Reef). We came over a gradual rise in the road to find a fantastic valley of bare rock opened up in front of us. The first 3 form a panoramic view.

Shortly afterwards we drove along Hell's Backbone (a fairly long descending ridge between two very deep valleys, barely wider than the road) and passed by the Kiva coffee shop (but didn't stop, the view from it would have been fantastic).
